Knitting Knee-Highs: Sock Styles from Classic to Contemporary by Barb Brown

If you love to knit socks then this is the book for you! Barb Brown has put a lot of thought into this book and the layout of it is excellent. There are twenty patterns included, ranging from Fair Isle, cabled, lace and ribbed. Everyone of them has wonderful detail. Don’t let the title of the book fool you; you don’t have to be a lover of knee-high socks. Most patterns have an ankle length variation. There are also a few leg warmer patterns included. Each pair of socks is also pictured in a number of color combinations that allows the reader to see what their chosen color scheme may look like (if it is featured!).

It is not often that I come across a knitting book and want to knit all the patterns; I have found that in this book though. There are no socks here that I would not want to knit! My personal favorites are Celeigh, Flora, Counterpane and Stalking.

The patterns themselves are laid out in written form and each one has a chart to go with it. As an added bonus in this book, there is a “Getting Started” section, that includes detailed information on how to convert knee-high patterns into other sock styles, tips for custom fitting and very detailed information on the knee-high formula. If I had one criticism of this book it would be that there is no information with the patterns as to whether they are for the beginner, intermediate or advanced knitter. My recommendation is that if you are new to knitting then you are probably not ready for this book yet. I would say that the patterns are for knitters for intermediate to advanced knitting skills. Most of the patterns also need knowledge of two-colored yarn knitting.

If you get this book, I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
