On Sunday it will be 200 years since the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Many people think slavery was a thing of the past. Let’s have a look at the world around us, are we really free of slavery? The simple answer is no. In our newspapers and on our news channels we hear of stories about girls being brought into our countries to work in brothels, amny of them have been duped and thought they were coming to a new promised lifestyle only to find once they get off the plane that the promise ends in the hands of their new “owner”. There are many children around the world who are abducted from their families and forced to work as slaves or join the army – countries like Sudan, Northern Uganda instantly come to mind. Other countries where parents are so poor that they sell their children to survive, with unfortunate consequences for the children. The list can go on and on. We are definitely not slave free today. A good site to check out if you are interested in reading further is Stop the Traffik. Let’s remember those enslaved over the coming days and pray for their freedom.
