Whaling

1 Jun

I was really pleased today to read that the IWC (International Whaling Commission) has overwhelmingly validated the commercial whaling ban, which effectively overturns last year’s statement by a temporary pro-whaling majority that it was “no longer required”.  Japan and Iceland are not too pleased about this, and Japan has responded by saying that it will leave the IWC and start it’s own organisation?!?  Next week  CITIES (Convention on International Trade on Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) will be meeting.  Here whaling countries will be trying to resume international trade in whale products (Japan are allowed to kill 500 minke whales each year for “scientific research” although, these whales are found in their fish markets!).  I think the IWC vote this week has firmly shut the door in their face to this.
